    Bloom, Sol.
    November 2, 1883

Sol Bloom, at considerable expense, procured a large number of handsomely gotten up signs, painted on tin, calling the attention of people to his business in this city. These signs were distributed all over the country, in many places on each of the different highways leading to this place. Some miscreant, no doubt for a purpose, destroyed all of them. Detectives have ascertained who done it, and in a few days he will have a chance to vindicate his acts in the courts. There is a heavy penalty provided by our statutes for such acts, and Sol will see that the law is rigidly enforced.

Lai Rabbi and Sherman Street Grocer

    Remembrance from Colman Family Descendants

Nathan Colman Tallit and Gold Headed Cane
    Deadwood South Dakota

Nathan Colman and Daughters Anne and Blanche

Nathan Colman Tallit and Gold Headed Cane

Using this Tallit (Prayer Shawl) Nathan Colman served as a Lay Rabbi and Justice of the Peace performing Marriage and High Holiday Ceremonies in Town, as well as traveling many miles to provide religious services in isolated Jewish communities on the rural great plains. In 1879 Colman officiated at the first Hebrew Wedding in the Black Hills. The gold at the Head of the Cane came from a Mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Hebrew Congregation of Deadwood in appreciation presented it to Nathan Colman in1891 for his many years of service to the Jewish Community.

Nathan Colman was the Son of Gumbert Kugelman (Colman) and Betti Hattenbach a Sister of Moses Hattenbach.
